Cannot edit the bibliography

I am trying Mendeley for the first time and have loaded about half the references for this paper into Mendeley. For a variety of reasons I cannot add the others to Mendeley now. When I 'create bibliography' it makes a bibliography with the citations I've added to the paper, and puts it at the end of the document where I want it, but it seems to have all the references tied together as one object, and I cannot insert other references, or edit any aspect of the references it has printed. Ithought it would just come into the word document as regular word text. How do I edit the bibliography? thanks Michelle
