I'm a newbie, but I was already organizing my PDFs in a folder and renaming them by author and date...so I immediately pointed Mendeley Desktop to that folder. Perhaps unfortunately, the folder contains about 8 GB of PDFs. I didn't see much in the way of guidance on how to do this other than it was possible and that you could arrange to rename your files - but I didn't appreciate what that was all about.
It took me a while to realize that my files in the watch folder are moved (and maybe were renamed) to the Mendeley server and to an appdata folder on my desktop computer. All well and good I thought, but then I've had to restart Mendeley Desktop a couple of times and realized I have to reset my watch folder each time this happens. Today, when I did that it looked like duplicates of documents were being uploaded to Mendeley's server - perhaps because I changed the way the documents in my watch folder are renamed? ...although I don't think I changed this setting. It also looks like my desktop folder has been emptied and the whole 8 GB copying process seems to be starting all over again.
Anyway, I'm concerned about any redundancies being created (increasing my storage size substantially) and the potential difficulty and lost time if I have to start all over again.
Perhaps some simple beginner tips (Do's and Don'ts) with respect to the Watch folder might be helpful.
Thanks, Curtis
