"To join Mendeley, please connect to the internet." - error

Hi there, I have just downloaded Mendeley (version 0.9.9.2 because that is the last version running on my Mac OX S 10.4.11), but cannot set it up because it is claiming that there is no internet connection. Which is obviously not true as I am posting this right now. As I can't get past this start-window (where all I can click is "Retry" or "Continue" - with the same result = nothing, or "Proxy settings" where I have no idea what to do...), I cannot really change any settings as suggested in previous posts... What can I do? I really have no idea about how to modify firewall-settings or the proxy-settings (or rather: what to change them to and why that is necessary), so step-by-step-instructions would be amazing! :) Thanks a lot!
